URBAN GREEN

Organization Earth's initiatives for the development of urban greening reflect its commitment to promoting sustainable and environmentally friendly solutions to improve the quality of life in cities. In addition to the obvious benefits to the urban environment, these initiatives also provide educational and healing opportunities for residents with a focus on vulnerable groups.

Social Organic Vegetable Garden of Petroupolis

Through the collaboration between Organization Earth, the Municipality of Petroupoli, and with the support of the John S. Latsis Public Benefit Foundation, the Petroupoli Social Organic Garden was created. An abandoned public space was transformed into a thriving garden that provides education, healthy food, and a creative outlet for the local community, aiming to promote a more sustainable way of life and foster social empowerment. Thanks to this partnership, the Garden has already become a point of reference for urban organic farming and sustainable food systems, strengthening the food self-sufficiency of its participants while promoting intergenerational reconnection with the land and nature. Through this process, 40 families have formed a learning and productive community, contributing part of their harvest to local social support structures. At the same time, schools visit the Garden, offering children the opportunity to learn about the value of healthy nutrition and the benefits of a more sustainable lifestyle. In addition, hands-on workshops open to the public are regularly organized, focusing on developing green skills that are relevant to everyday life.

Therapeutic Garden at the Asklepieion of Voula

Organization EARTH has created the first pilot healing garden in a public hospital, at the Asklipieio of Voula. This garden includes aromatic plants and an organic vegetable garden, designed to support the needs of the hospital’s new Department of Child Psychiatry. Through caring for the plants and engaging with nature, children are offered a experience that supports their healing process and promotes their mental well-being.

Rock the block

The project "Integrated Participatory Tools for Affordable Housing" (Rock the Block) is an innovative pilot initiative focused on affordable housing and vibrant neighborhoods. It combines technical interventions with creative actions, supported by the European Union and the European Urban Initiative – Innovation Action, and is aligned with the principles of the New European Bauhaus.

The goal is to provide multi-level solutions and key technical interventions to improve housing conditions in selected apartment buildings in the Municipality of Aigaleo, while also enhancing living conditions within communities of mutual support, solidarity, and institutional backing.

Organization Earth contributes to the project with its expertise in sustainable education, urban farming, and citizen mobilization through participatory collective actions. Within this framework, it promotes sustainability and affordable housing through activities focused on greening communal spaces, urban agriculture, and reducing food waste, while strengthening resident re-engagement, green skills, and environmental responsibility.

The Municipality of Aigaleo is the project coordinator, with partners including:

  • Aristotle University of Thessaloniki.

  • Institute of Regional Development of Panteion University.

  • National Centre for Scientific Research "Demokritos"

  • Architectural firm AREA™.

  • Urban and cultural development consultancy SYMBOLO GP.

  • And civil society organizations: Urbana, InCommOn, Organization Earth, and Ochi Paizoume.

The project's best practices will be shared and transferred to the partner municipalities of Józsefváros in Budapest, Naples, and Paris.
